Anonymous asked: What makes sea salt soaks so effective for the healing process of piercings? Is there specific ingredients contained in it to fight off infections, irritation and bacteria?

This is a good opportunity to dispel some myths. Sea salt solution is not a magic potion that will cure all your ails. There is no anti-bacterial action going on there its just irrigation. Yes, it can be effective as an aftercare product, but it needs to be used in a very specific way.

We’ve covered sea salt solution a bunch of times on the blog. The main thing is that you need to match your body’s salt level with the solution. If you are mixing sea salt solution correctly (1/4 teaspoon of pure sea salt in 8 ounces of distilled or purified water) you’ll get a mixture that is roughly the same salinity (saltiness) as the moisture in your skin. This correct balance will give you an isotonic solution. This means that you can flush, rinse, or soak a piercing site without over drying the skin. Mix your solution to strongly and you get a hypertonic (too salty) solution. Too strong a solution and you draw out moisture from the skin and over-dry the piercing site. That’s all there is to it. Sea salt solution does not fight off any bacteria.

When you heal a piercing your aftercare is not meant to kill kill kill the germs in the area. A healthy body has a great immune system, you want to let it do all the work for you. Sea salt solution is only there is help rinse away the debris you pick up over the course of the day, or to soothe mild irritation from the piercing being stressed by the world. A good rinse or soak with SSS or saline soothes the skin by flushing away the discharge your body secretes during the healing process. That’s it.
